Schools, gymnasium, canteen
Rillieux-la-Pape, Rhône, France

The Paul Chevallier school is located in a mixed urban setting, between a park, public amenities, apartment blocks and houses.
Our project structures the area as a whole, with an architectural configuration on different scales. The gymnasium, on Rue Salignat, proclaims its status as a public facility. The schools, which have a lower profile, are set along a transverse pedestrian pathway, in a naturalistic, familiar register. The project is based on a segmentation of the site, and a modest, discreet architectural approach. Planted-out, accessible roofs give the neighbouring buildings a view over a meadow. The classrooms are spacious and open to the outside world. Most of them face southward, towards the playground. The interiors have been carefully planned to have a welcoming feeling, with the omnipresence of natural light and exposed wood.
KLH panels are used throughout the complex, and an ambitious environmental approach has been implemented, notably with a wood-fired heating system and the use of solar energy.
