Léon Jouhaux school
Villeurbanne, Rhône, France

This extension to an existing school comprises a solid, almost completely opaque base, and an overhanging storey of lightweight construction.
The treatment of the two floors reflects the different functions of the building.
The simple volumes are in a contemporary architectural idiom. The ground floor is a solid plinth with a mineral cladding whose self-effacing character enhances the prominence of the upper floor, which is completely constructed in wood, and looks out over the street.
It was the need to provide protection from the sun, and the idea of concealing the service facilities, that led us to create a facade structured by louvres of varying heights.
